David's parents are Richard and Mary Ellen (Forbell) Van Wicklen
Mary Alice's parents are Benjamin and Mary Adeline [Denton] Sprague.

Background information:

David^8 L. Van Wicklen (Richard^7, Jacob^6 Lott, Derrick^5, Gerrit^4, Evert^3, Gerrit^2, Jentie^1 Jeppes) was b. 20 May 1870, Brooklyn, NY and d. 1937. He married Mary Alice Sprague (b. 17 June 1872, East Rockaway, NY; died 1953) 28 Dec 1888. They lived at 18 First Avenue in East Rockaway, Nassau, NY. David took an active interest in the community and served for 25 years in the Republican party, 20 years as village trustee, and chief of the East Rockaway Fire Dept. He was the chief clerk in the sheriff's office when he died. Mary Alice was the daughter of Benjamin and Mary Adeline [Denton] Sprague. Benjamin Sprague served twice in the Civil War. At age 14 he volunteered by falsifying his age and became a drummer boy, and later served where he suffered permanent "shell shock." Mary Alice (affectionately known as "old grandma" died in 1953 at the age of 81.

(per 1880 Census, Hennenlotter Collection at Brooklyn Historical Society calls him David L., son of Richard, says he m. Alice Sprague and in 1939 she resided at Lynbrook, L.I. and had J. Lott, Nellie (Langdon), David E. (m. ___ Griffith), and Elizabeth. This accounts for four of the five grandchildren of Richard, see below.)

Children: Jacob^9 Lott Van Wicklen, b. June 1890, L.I., NY. He was called "Lott." He married Izetta ____, (b. 1895, NY and d. 1972) before 1918. They had three children, Mary Alice, Doris, and Lottie Mae. Lottie Mae married Hank Cook and they had five children: Phyllis, Margaret and Kathleen [twins], Julie and Nancy. According to 1920 US Census, J. Lott Van Wicklen, age 29 (b. abt 1890, NY) resides in Hempstead, Nassau, NY with his wife, Izetta, age 25 and his daughter, Doris, age 2; Nell^9 Irene "Nellie" Van Wicklen, b. October 1892, L.I., NY.  Nellie married David Storm Langdon [distant cousin] and they had one child, Helen; David^9 Erastus Van Wicklen, b. 12 March 1895, East Rockaway, L.I., NY (married Edith Brown in 1909). At time of WWI registration he was living on 1st Avenue in E. Rockaway, NY and was a plumber for Alberta Plumbing Co., Long Beach, NY. He is described at tall and slender with brown eyes and hair; Mary Elizabeth^9 "Libby" Van Wicklen, b. 1 April 1898, L.I., NY married Ira Wallace Griffin in Nov 1916 and had three children: David Ira [called Ira] (b. 19 July 1918, d. 6 Feb 1999), Mary Elaine [Allen] (b. 16 Nov 1921), and Lois Elizabeth [LaFrentere](b. 28 Feb 1928).

The Chat, newspaper of Flatbush, 10 December 1927; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Van Wicklen (David^8 L. VW's father) married 60 years ago last Monday (which was Dec. 5th). Reside South Main St., Freeport. He is 84 and she 77, nee Mary Forbell, both born East New York (part of New Lots), families moved to Jamaica where they were married. he was for some years Keeper of the Coast Guard Light at Long Beach, 4 children and 5 grandchildren. To daughters Margeret Langdon, and Georgina Brown, one third each; a son Morris and his daughter, Emily Bedell, share remainder. A granddaughter, Edith L. Van Wicklen, executrix." ...?? from Schatzle is Edith Griffin wife of David E. VW, b. say 1900?)

June 1872, NY (NY, NY), 28 (M-11) and son, Jacob L., b. June 1890, NY, 9, at school, dau., Nellie, b. Oct 1892, NY, 7, at school, son, David E., b. Mar 1895, NY, 5, and dau., Elizabeth, b. Apr 1898, NY, 2.

1910 US Census for District 13, Hempstead, Nassau, NY lists David L., head, 39 (first marriage, 20 years), b. NY (NY, NY), plumber with wife Alice, 38 (M1-20), Jacob Lott, 20, plumber, Nellie, 17, David, 15, and Elizabeth, 12. (All b. NY, with parents b. NY)

WWI Draft Registration (1917-1918) for David E. Van Wicklen of 1st Avenue, E. Rockaway, NY. Born 12 March 1895, East Rockaway, NY. He was a plumber for Alberta Plumbing Co., Long Beach, NY. He was tall and slender with brown eyes and hair (not balding).
